Who is Tom Kowalski?

Tom Kowalski, the inspiration behind Play4TK, passed away after a 5½ year battle with Multiple Myeloma.

A DePaul University graduate, Tom connected with his community through his passion for sports, channeling his love of the game into meaningful relationships as a board member for the Lake Zurich Baseball and Softball Association, coaching his two sons' basketball teams, and serving as an educational consultant for professional athletes across the Greater Chicago Area.

In his final years, Tom became an ambassador educating others about living with Multiple Myeloma. His approach to sports went far beyond competition — it was about building character, confidence, and community. As a basketball coach, he was known for his encouragement and positive mindset, qualities he maintained even while battling cancer.

Today, Play4TK carries forward Tom's legacy through an annual March Madness bracket challenge that combines his love of basketball with raising funds for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Play4TK

Play4TK is a fundraiser, not a registered charity itself – but every dollar donated goes directly to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), one of the most respected and transparent cancer research nonprofits in the country. Play4TK is officially partnered with the MMRF, and we have donated over $43,000 to their mission since 2019. So while you’re filling out your bracket and competing for prizes, every entry you purchase is contributing to real research funding for a real cause.
Play4TK is an officially recognized fundraiser partner of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). Every year, once the National Championship is played, we make our annual contribution to the MMRF (typically the same night or the following day) and announce that year’s total publicly. We send a follow-up email to all participants that includes a screenshot of our donation receipt so you can see exactly what was sent and to whom. No guesswork, no vague promises. Since 2020, we’ve donated over $43,000 to the MMRF. We take that number seriously and we’re proud to show our work every year.
Play4TK was started by Drew Kowalski and Tommy Kowalski – two brothers honoring the memory of their father, Tom Kowalski, a beloved sports coach in our community who passed away from multiple myeloma in 2013. After a couple of years of running it themselves, their childhood friend Mike Lowe (whose own uncle passed from multiple myeloma in 2000) saw the potential to take what Drew and Tommy had built and grow it into something much bigger. Mike’s company, Growth Saloon, stepped in to build the systems and infrastructure needed to scale the fundraiser (the website, payment processing, bracket tracking, the participant dashboard, and more). The year before Growth Saloon got involved, Play4TK donated $750 – last year, we donated over $13,500. Drew and Tommy are still the faces of this fundraiser – Growth Saloon just works behind the scenes.
Drew and Tommy Kowalski started Play4TK as a way to honor their father and rally their community around a cause that hit close to home. For the first couple of years, they ran it the way most people would (coordinating through texts and group chats, tracking payments manually, and relying on word of mouth). It worked, but it had a ceiling. That’s when their childhood friend Mike Lowe (founder of Growth Saloon) got involved. He saw what Drew and Tommy had built and knew that with the right systems behind it, this thing could grow into something that made a real dent. Growth Saloon built the website, the dashboard, the payment and bracket tracking integrations, and the outreach infrastructure that now powers the fundraiser each year. Drew and Tommy are still the heart of Play4TK – they spread the word, they’re the faces of the fundraiser, and they’re the reason it exists at all. Growth Saloon works behind the scenes. That combination is what took the annual donation from $750 to $13,500 (and it’s what keeps pushing it higher every year).
Brackets lock at the tip-off of the first game of the NCAA Tournament. For 2026 this is March 19th at approximately 11:00 AM CST. Once that first game begins, no new brackets can be submitted and no changes can be made. Don’t wait, submit early.

Your bracket could be the cure.
